This is a rather rough vikingish spangenhelm I made for an SCA college medieval club. It hasn't gotten much use, but you can see from the chipped paint that it has passed its first test of battle.
Functionally, I am happy with the visibility and construction, its not supper pretty, but it was not meant to. That and I'd need to but some fancier tools!
The head plates and lower piece are 14 ga galvnised steel from the scrap yard
The wide bands are 16 ga steel. riveted together with small solid steel rivets.
The bars were welded on for me by a good friend 'Thorgar' though recently I have had some lessons in doing this myself.
Nice looking helm. I've been needing to get a new one for a while, but its very hard to find that perfect helm that has the exact visibility you want, know what i mean?
i've been fighting with a borrowed sugarloaf helm for about five years now, and haven't had any signifigant problem with visibility. but then again, i could have just gotten used to it.
how many cranium plates did you use? i have never had a decent dishing stump, so i never got good at dishing those shapes. i am having a helmet commissioned by a freind and helm-smith.
the top has four plates. It is donv in quarters, with the plates riveted to the stips of steel that cross front to back and side to side.
It is very tricky getting it dished right, especially so that you have an oval shape not just a circle. My stump was not so grvat but I had a good big ball stake that I used as a hammer

ya vision is a huge thing for me. I've got this need to know whats going on. The new helm i'm working on has a much larger eye opening, and there are no bars directly in the way of my eyesight, so it works very well.
